A lot of credit for the love Malayalam cinema seems to be getting this year needs to be attributed to how movies from Kerala became a Covid-time indulgence for people from across the country. If some of the new-age classics were discovered in retrospect, the others were new releases that changed how the Malayalam industry saw the Covid-time content drought. And if there’s one person who first saw an opportunity here, it has to be editor-director Mahesh Narayanan, kickstarting this wave with C U Soon, a screenlife thriller that paved the way for the nimble, talent-backed industry. He was able to follow that up with the Godfather-inspired Malik, turning FaFa into an all India phenomenon.
