Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal was a seminal film in Hindi cinema’s history, not just for the money it made — the fifth highest-grossing Hindi film of all time — but for the way it energised discourse around cinema’s form and the ethical demands we make of it. Having already provoked a heated discourse with his previous Telugu hit (also his debut) Arjun Reddy, which he translated to Hindi with equal success as Kabir Singh, Animal was a sign of Vanga moving his craft into territories that were both uncomfortable and edifying. His collar-up, don’t-care attitude to both style and substance is something that people latched onto in an industry where imagination feels lacking and gumption is largely missing.
