Shilpa Rao has been a presence in Hindi cinema for over 17 years, building an impressive body of work as a playback singer, from Laal Singh Chaddha’s ‘Tere Hawaale’ (with Arijit Singh) to Pathaan’s ‘Besharam Rang’ and Jawan’s ‘Chaleya’. She has also collaborated with an eclectic group of artists to establish a brand that’s almost become a ISI mark for listeners. Her dusky, heavy voice with ghazal inflections has become the de-facto sound of Deepika Padukone in her hit songs.
