FC-Ormax Power List of Technicians 2024: Amit Ray and Subrata Chakraborty

This National Film Award-winning duo is best known for creating worlds that bring the past to glamorous, cinematic life. For Gangubai Kathiawadi, Amit Ray and Subrata Chakraborty — both studied art at Santiniketan, in Bengal — created an exquisite set in Mumbai’s Film City, which drew upon the city’s historic red-light areas for inspiration while also adding an element of photogenic fantasy to realise director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s vision. In Sam Bahadur, directed by Meghna Gulzar, they were tasked with showing the passage of time over four decades. Their work shows the enormous but quiet impact of production design in making a film feel compelling to a discerning viewer.
