A living legend of Indian cinema, Anil Mehta’s love affair with image-making may have started with still photography as a child, but his journey as a cinematographer began during his years as a student of Film and Television Institute of India. He is renowned today for the way his camera infuses a poetic flourish and an element of the dramatic into the everyday. Whether it’s the painterly grandeur of theatrical films like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil or the twinkling poetry of the streaming feature Darlings, Mehta’s cinematography uses light and shadow to uncover the most beautiful aspect of his subjects.
