“What do people call you?”

“We've been called demonologists, ghost hunters, paranormal researchers, kooks, wackos, but we prefer to be known simply as Ed and Lorraine Warren”.

Yes, they are indeed just that, two extraordinary individuals resolute in their beliefs, determined in their pursuit of truth even in the midst of skepticism. This is how we are introduced to this power couple from one of the most chilling horror franchises, The Conjuring film series directed by James Wan and Michael Chaves. Their love has matured with every new movie that tests the very limits of their commitment to each other and their shared mission. It is this unyielding devotion for each other that drives every decision they take, every case they solve and every family they save.

Being a horror aficionado, it should come as no surprise that I found my favorite on-screen pair within the horror universe. The genre thrives on the fear of the unknown and the macabre, yet The Conjuring films always have more to offer. The stories are based on the true events and exploits of Ed (played by Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (played by Vera Farmiga), a married couple who undertake paranormal investigation. There is no doubt that it takes a special kind of creative thought to introduce characters with such a delicate balance of empathy and bravery right in the heart of a horror franchise. That is exactly what makes Lorraine and Ed so compelling. Even in the face of incomprehensible terrors, they are both deeply rooted in unwavering humanity. Their story itself serves as a metaphor for life, showing how only love can keep you grounded when you are faced with the unfathomable tragedies of everyday life.

The partnership that Lorraine and Ed share in their personal and professional life is very refreshing with a good balance of autonomy, agency and expertise between the duo. Ed holds deep admiration for Lorraine's psychic abilities, wholeheartedly trusting her intuitions. But he is also acutely aware that these experiences take a mental toll on her. Similarly, Lorraine recognizes and worries over Ed’s physical limitation in pursuing the case. They both try to shield one another but they also respect each other’s boundaries, constantly ensuring that they are both comfortable and consenting to participate. Their profound understanding goes beyond just verbal interactions or Lorraine’s clairvoyance as they create a safe space to express their fears and vulnerabilities without any judgment or coercion. In the process, the couple surpass the usual horror archetypes and become characters with substance. They wholeheartedly believe that they were brought together for a reason, and therefore every decision they take is made in unison and shows a balanced power dynamic between the two.

I think the additional appeal to their romantic story is also because of Ed’s subversion of gender stereotypes. He is proactive in household chores and takes care of his wife, showcasing a more equitable approach to domestic responsibilities. His charm is ever-present, seizing every opportunity to flirt with his beloved. There is a lighthearted moment in the second film when Ed casually picks up a guitar at the Hodgson’s family home and sings Elvis Presley’s iconic song “Can’t Help Falling in Love”. His rendition is heartfelt as he brings a temporary respite to everyone plagued by the horrors of the house. Lorraine watches him in amusement, admiring his small initiative to cheer up the kids. With a knowing smile, Ed directs the title line of the song to Lorraine, and in that intimate moment, their love blooms anew. It is a poignant reminder to the love that fuels their passion and the devotion that keeps them brave together.

Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga exude an undeniable chemistry to bring Ed and Lorraine to life in The Conjuring universe. Their body language is so captivating that you can’t help but notice how they hang on to every word spoken by the other, zooming in to each other’s expression and studying the same with genuine interest. They unconsciously lean in towards each other as if the small physical distance between them is painfully far. The casting is beyond doubt a stroke of genius as Vera embodies the emotional intelligence and unwavering strength of Lorraine while Patrick marvels at the technical brilliance and steadfast determination of Ed. Even in the middle of horror, they know how to find moments of levity. It is an indication of the tenacity of their spirit to restrain fear from overpowering their love.

At the end of every tale, the couple share a moment to express their gratitude for one another. It is a small acknowledgement of the fact that they could not have triumphed over the terror without this companionship. Theirs is a testament of the power of love, the leap of faith- to believe in each other when nobody else will. When all is done and dusted, as they share a nostalgic kiss under the gazebo, I am reminded that sometimes the greatest risk we undertake is not in search for answers, but for love and the firm conviction that it will help conquer all.
