The trailer of Soorma, the biopic of hockey player Sandeep Singh, practically shows you the entire film. We see Singh as a lazy child, being punished by his coach, who grows up into Diljit Dosanjh (who plays it like the usual loveable dolt he plays in most of his films). He falls in love with Taapsee Pannu, who is also a hockey player, and makes it to the India team despite all odds. He is accidentally shot by a gun two days before the World Cup, and after 2 years, makes a comeback to the team. It's an incredible story, and Shaad Ali's film (Saathiya, Bunty Aur Babli, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom) plays it by the numbers. It looks very much like the kind of film where a character, a sports official, says, "Why are we spending so much on a handicapped person?" Not to mention, the Pakistan-hostility that accompanies Singh's return to the turf.
Here's hoping for a film that is better than its trailer.
Soorma is produced by Sony Pictures Networks Productions, Chitrangda Singh and Deepak Singh. It has music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and lyrics by Gulzar. It releases on 13 July.
