The trailer of Raksha Bandhan begins with an epigraph from an unknown source, "Sometimes being a brother is even better than being a superhero". The film follows Akshay Kumar's journey as he tries to get his younger sisters (Sadia Khateeb, Sahejmeen Kaur, Deepika Khanna, Smrithi Srikanth) married, so that he can finally marry the love of his life, his childhood sweetheart played by Bhumi Pednekar.

The story of Raksha Bandhan is written by director Aanand L. Rai's (Atrangi Re, Tanu Weds Manu, Tanu Weds Manu Returns) frequent writer Himanshu Sharma along with Kanika Dhillon. With music by Himesh Reshammiya — the first time the composer is collaborating with Anand L Rai — and lyrics by regular collaborator Irshad Kamil, the film, shot by K U Mohanan, releases in theaters on August 11.
