Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness Trailer Talk: Patrick Stewart Returns As Professor X

Professor X (Patrick Stewart) returns. There's a Maria Rambeau variant of Captain Marvel. Three Doctor Stranges (all played by Benedict Cumberbatch) converge in the same universe. And all this because MIT rejected Peter Parker's college application.

Following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), in which Strange attempted to fix the multiverse and send every interloper back home, it seems as though his scheme has not been entirely successful.  "Every night, I dream the same dream. And then the nightmare begins," is his voiceover that opens Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, set to visuals of the sorcerers under attack and the Sanctum Sanctorum now lying decrepit. Now that the portals between universes have been opened, Strange seeks out Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), currently in hiding after the events of WandaVision, to ask for her help shutting them. "You break the rules and become the hero, I do it and become the enemy. That doesn't seem fair," she says, conveniently forgetting that Strange has saved half the universe and she once enslaved a town because she was sad.

Wanda and Strange are joined by America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez), a teenager with the power to open star-shaped portals into different realities. Reprising their MCU roles are Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer, Benedict Wong as Wong and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo. There are shots of Wanda back at her WestView home and Strange fighting the extraterrestrial monster Shuma Gorath. "We should tell him the truth," says a voice that sounds unmistakably like Patrick Stewart reprising his role as Professor X.

Written by Loki head writer Michael Waldron and directed by Sam Raimi, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness releases in theatres on May 6.
