Based on the Telugu horror film Bhaagamathie (2018) starring Anushka Shetty (also known for its wonderful song, Mandaara) Durgamati starring Bhumi Pednekar is also directed by G Ashok. He joins the ranks of South Indian film-makers who re-make their films in Hindi themselves- Gautham Menon (Ekk Deewana Tha), Sandeep Reddy Vanga (Kabir Singh), and Raghava Lawrence (Laxmii).

Arshad Warsi plays the do-gooder politician Eashwar Prasad. The first we see him, he is sermonising,  "The power of people is always stronger than the people in power". Bhumi Pednekar plays the alliterative Chanchal Chauhan, a confidante of Prasad, who is interrogated in a haunted Durgamati Haveli to extract damning information on him. The haveli is haunted, and the living are taunted by the spirit of Durgamati which finds a home in Channchal Chauhan's body. As Durgamati she is first seen hurting herself, hammering her hand to the wall that she is also banging her head on. Later, she is seen donning the avatar of Durga, seated on a snake-throne, with a trishul, and Sanskrit lyrics chanted, credited to Joe Paul.

Produced by Cape of Good Films, Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar and Vikram Malhotra, and starring Bhumi Pednekar, Arshad Warsi, Jisshu Sengupta, Mahie Gill and Karan Kapadia, the film premieres on December 11 on Amazon Prime Video
