Maanaadu Trailer Talk: Venkat Prabhu Merges A Chief Minister’s Assassination With A Time Loop Thriller

The makers of Maanaadu released the trailer of the Silambarasan starrer at 11:25 today. Directed by Venkat Prabhu, this is the star's first release after Eeswaran. The two-minute trailer suggests a slick time loop thriller that begins with Silambarasan's character waking up in an aeroplane.

The incident that keeps repeating in this loop could be the assassination attempt of a Tamil Nadu Chief Minster, played in the film by SA Chandrasekhar at a maanaaadu (a political conference). Although the first few shots suggests that Silambarasan's character himself is the assassin, this information could be deceptive in the film.

SJ Suryah's character plays a police officer and the only other character who seems to notice the repetition of events. We also see shots of car chases and action blocks, both staples of the director. Silambarasan looks much younger in this new look of the film and it will be interesting to see how a high-concept film such as this would translate to the masses.

The film's teaser had shown glimpses of its two leading actors but the interesting part was that it was almost entirely in reverse. Even the film's title suggests a similar time-travel concept in the way events play out. The team had released a new poster yesterday.

Initial reports suggest that Silambarasan's name in the film is Abdul Khaaliq. Posters so far hints at that it would be a political drama, the first in the genre for its director. Apart from Kalyani Priyadarshan and SJ Suryah, the film also stars Bharathiraja, SA Chandrasekar, Premgi Amaren and others. The director returns to cousin Yuvan Shankar Raja for the music to make it their eighth collaboration. Venkat Prabhu had recently produced Chimbudevan's Kasada Thapara. Maanaadu is being produced by Suresh Kamatchi's V House Productions. The team has already released a single from the film titled 'Meherezylaa'.

In an earlier interview, Venkat Prabhu said, "STR will have a different kind of stylisation (in Maanaadu). The film is a political thriller, a genre neither of us have taken up yet. We want to surprise the audience with a film they would never have expected from the both of us."
