“It’s a house where a dreadful unnatural death happened. The only thing left in the house is a bloodthirsty ghost!” — A voiceover introduces us to the world of filmmaker Aashiq Abu's latest offering Neelavelicham, that promises to be a terrifying, yet unique take on the ghost story.
The tenant of the house, played by Tovino Thomas, is a humble writer, who gets intrigued by the legend of the mighty Bhargavi (Rima Kallingal), who allegedly committed suicide due to a love failure. While most films would depict the tenant of the haunted house to be terrified by the ghost, the glimpses of the trailer offer a reversal to the idea: the novelist wants to get connected with the ghost. It almost seems as if the writer is “possessed”, wanting to solve the mystery of what happened to Bhargavi. The trailer closes with Tovino saying, “It's not a suicide as we thought”, piquing the viewers' interest.
Based on Vaikom Muhammad Basheer’s short story of the same name, Neelavelicham is also the remake of the 1964 Malayalam film Bhargavi Nilayam. The film co-stars Roshan Mathew and Shine Tom Chacko in prominent roles. It is slated to hit the screens on April 20.
