Sulthan Trailer Talk: Karthi’s Sulthan Is A One-Man Army In An Action-Packed Trailer

The trailer begins with a group of people being described as a troop of elephants. The government seems uncertain how to deal with them. We don't know whether Karthi's Sulthan is on their side or against them. But, we get a mythical-looking christening shot where Lal's character names a baby 'Sulthan'. It appears like Sulthan is the darling of his village.

There's very little we learn about the film's plot. The trailer is designed to exhibit — with quick edits — slick action set pieces featuring Karthi and songs that also feature Rashmika Mandanna. Her character doesn't seem to like him, until she does, but appears important to the story. The trailer shifts to a more serious mood after we see a shot of her character get hit by a rowdy.

There's a corporate villain who plots to break up the unity of Sulthan's people. The teaser referred to the Mahabharata. The trailer ends with a reference to the Ramayana. Sulthan is, intriguingly, described as a hundred-headed Ravana!

A teaser for the film was released in February 2021. It plays heavily on the dichotomy between good and evil in the Mahabharata. Karthi's Sulthan is presented as a Krishna-like figure who sides with the apparently evil side.

A 'massy' teaser that reveals the film's theme without giving away anything about its plot—is Sulthan on parole? How does he get embroiled in the war against the two groups? Is he an accomplice of the police? The trailer ends with Sulthan (Krishna in this metaphor) lashing his whip.

Sulthan is directed by Bakkiyaraj Kannan. It is Karthi's next film after Kaithi (directed by Lokesh Kanakaraj) and Thambi. It has music by Vivek-Mervin (who had recently worked in Pattas) and cinematography by Sathyan Sooryan (who has worked earlier in Master and Kaithi). The film also stars Rashmika Mandanna, Napoleon, Lal and Yogi Babu. It is produced by Dream Warrior Pictures and is slated for release on April 2,  2021.
