99 Songs Trailer Talk: AR Rahman’s Musical Crescendos Find A Narrative Companion
Updated on

The Oscar-winning music composer A R Rahman debuts as both writer and producer for 99 Songs, a movie he has also scored. Starring debutantes Ehan Bhat as Jay, and Edilsy Vargas as Sophia, the film follows Jay's pursuit for both music and love; he's a struggling musician.

The trailer begins with Jay as a child, experiencing the euphoria of music, and his father's dissenting voice. Music destroyed the family once. He is not going to let it happen again. Facing empty music sheets, now an adult, Jay is in pursuit of a song that can, quite literally, change the world.

The background music and soundtrack for the film, composed by A. R. Rahman, which was in production since 2015, consists of 14 original compositions. It was released in March last year. In our review of the album, critic Baradwaj Rangan noted, "This isn't just a movie's soundtrack album. It's a 'concept album', like the whoppers that major rock bands used to make when music was more than just something you listened to while doing the dishes."

The film also stars Tenzin Dalha, Lisa Ray, Manisha Koirala, Rahul Ram, and Ranjit Barot. It had its world premiere at the 24th Busan International Film Festival in  South Korea, in 2019. The film is getting a theatrical release on April 16.
