Debutant director Deepak Sundarrajan's Annabelle Sethupathi brings Taapsee Pannu back to Tamil cinema (after Game Over) with a horror comedy and a star cast that includes Vijay Sethupathi, Yogi Babu, Raadhika Sarathkumar and Jagapathi Babu. The makers released a three-minute trailer of the film that gives us a peek into the genre of the film without revealing much about the plot.
Vijay Sethupathi plays Sethupathi, a king from colonial times who builds a huge palace for his wife, Annabelle (Taapsee Pannu). These parts are set in 1948, just after independence before princely states were integrated. We see shots of the king and his wife sitting on a tower looking over their kingdom.
The present day Taapsee Pannu appears to be entering the palace again to set off a sequence of frightfully comic events — the trailer reminds you strongly of the Aranmanai brand of horror comedy (there's even a line by Yogi Babu that suggests that all new stories are just recycled old stories). But why Annabelle returns to the palace as a ghost after she's been dead for long or why a whole entourage of ghosts from that period land up again in the place is not revealed. The trailer promises a film with a lot of absurd and dialogue-oriented comedy.
Annabelle Sethupathi is directed by Deepak Sundarrajan and produced by Passion Studios. The film stars Taapsee Pannu, Vijay Sethupathi, Yogi Babu, Raadhika Sarathkumar, Vennela Kishore, Rajendra Prasad and many other comic actors playing ghosts. Cinematography is by Goutham George, music by Kishna Kishor, and editing by Pradeep B Ragav. The film releases directly to OTT on Disney+ Hotstar on September 17.
