Pa Ranjith made his debut with the 2012 rom-com Attakathi. He then went on to make a series of action dramas such as Madras and Kaala. His upcoming release Natchathiram Nagargiradhu, sees the director returning back to where he started — romance. But this time to tell inclusive stories of contemporary love.
A group of theatre artists, including Kalaiarasan, Kalidas Jayaram and Dushara Vijayan, decide to put up a play on love, in keeping with the present times. The trailer opens with these characters discussing their play, further giving us glimpses of their individual love stories that beg the question – what is love?
For instance, one of them asks, 'Can romance happen only between men and women? Is the love between men and men and women and women not considered love?" The trailer shows us vignettes of young love, the concept of arranged marriages, and romance among queer relationships. And each character has their own views to tell – love is all fun, love isn't all that romantic, love is nothing but pain, etc.
The trailer, which features rapid cuts and Tenma's unique score, stresses on the signficance of accepting love in all its forms. Natchathiram Nagargiradhu is slated to hit the theatres on August 31.
