Chiyaan Vikram, who was last seen in the historical epic Ponniyin Selvan II, will be starring in director Pa Ranjith’s period drama Thangalaan. The film has been in production for the past year and is said to be based on the KGF mines of Karnataka. The film's teaser begins with a combat between Vikram’s tribe and a group of unseen assailants.
The tribe is victorious against the enemy and we see a heroic shot of Vikram twisting and killing a live snake and flinging it away with no qualms. We see glimpses of the tribe's lives as well as an impending war. Amid these events, there seems to be a group of British explorers who are searching for gold in the KGF mines.
There are allusions to the myth of El Dorado, the lost city of gold. We also get glimpses of Malavika Mohanan as a mystic, Parvathi Thiruvothu, and Pasupathy. The film seems to be a blend of myth, history, and magical realism. The dark and violent teaser ends with a shot of Vikram standing on a platform of shimmering gold as blood drips from his sword.
Thangalaan is directed by Pa Ranjith, who co-wrote the film with Tamil Prabha. KE Gnanavelraja backs it under the Studio Green banner in association with Neelam Productions. The film stars Vikram, Parvathi Thiruvothu, Pasupathy, Malavika Mohanan, Daniel Caltagirone, and Harikrishnan Anbudurai. GV Prakash Kumar is the music director while Kishor Kumar is the cinematographer and Selva RK is the editor. The film is set to be released on January 26, 2024.
