The trailer of Udanpirappe starring Jyothika (in her 50th film) and Sasikumar was released today. It looks like the film is going to be a rural drama centered around the relationship between a sister (Jyothika) and her brother (Sasikumar) who is a local do-gooder who fights against caste and other injustices. While she admires him, her husband, played by Samuthirakani, resents the fact that his brother-in-law gets involved in others' problems — and this creates a certain tension between the siblings.

There's also a subplot with a capitalistic villain trying to profit by forcing farmers to buy his tractors. Sasikumar's character talks about how it's those who make tractors who're actually dependent on farmers, and not the other way around. It looks like Udanpirappe is not going to be just a brother-sister sentiment melodrama, and might also have two of the staples of recent Tamil rural dramas: greedy capitalists and a hero who fights against them.

Jyothika's last release Ponmagal Vandhal also had a direct-to-OTT release on Amazon Prime Video. Her fiftieth film, Udanpirappe is releasing on Prime Video as a part of four-film deal with Suriya's and Jyothika's 2D Entertainment: Jyothika-starrer Udanpirappe, Oh My Dog, Suriya-starrer Jai Bhim and the already released Raame Aandalum Raavane Aandalum

The film is written and directed by Era. Saravanan. Cinematography is by R. Velraj and editing by Ruben. Music is by D. Imman, who has had several recent releases like Teddy, Laabam and Bhoomi, with Etharkkum Thunindhavan and Annaatthe being a few of his upcoming films. Udanpirappe releases on Amazon Prime Video on October 14.
