Trailer Talk: Chaitanya Tamhane’s The Disciple Comes To Netflix In April

Netflix has acquired Chaitanya Tamhane's The Disciple, his first feature film since 2014's Court. The film premiered in competition at last year's Venice Film Festival, the first Indian film to compete for the Golden Lion since Monsoon Wedding, before also playing at TIFF 2020. It won Best Screenplay and a FIPRESCI prize at Venice.

Aditya Modak stars at Sharad Nerulkar, a student of Hindustani classical music. The trailer features a voiceover by his grandmother, who says that our classical music shows the path to the divine. She also stresses the importance of sacrifice, and being lonely and hungry ('ektta aani upaashi'), when one embarks on this path. We see Sharad learning from his guru, but also massaging his back. He also begins to feel a friction between his riyaaz and his job: he won't be able to balance both, he tells his grandmother.

The Disciple is produced by Vivek Gomber and executive-produced by Alfonso Cuarón. It also stars Arun Dravid, Sumitra Bhave, Deepika Bhide Bhagwat and Kiran Yadnyopavit. It comes to Netflix on April 30th.
